Have you heard of the dog who stole the roast off the counter? Or the one who jumped on the dining table and ate the entire stick of butter? Recall the scene in A Christmas Story of the Bumpus hounds running into the Parker’s house and escaping with the turkey? Have a counter surfing story of your own?
If you must leave food on the counter or table, have a plan for occupying your dog during your absence. Put the dog in her crate or another room, or have a family member occupy her time. Or be prepared to tell her “Off” when she approaches the counter, and give her praise when she walks by it and ignores it. Clicker training is a great method for eliminating this behavior.
